Join New Mexico Legal Aid’s Volunteer Attorney Program (VAP) and offer your legal expertise to those in need. Our pro bono services are geared towards supporting low-income New Mexicans, and we provide numerous benefits to our volunteer attorneys.
Why Volunteer with VAP?
- Malpractice Insurance: Provided for all pro bono cases.
- Exclusive Resource Platform: Access free interactive CLEs, resources, mentoring, and peer support through the VAP Pro Bono Collaborative ECHO Program.
- CLE Credits: Earn up to 9 General (Self-Study) CLE Credits per year for pro bono services rendered during VAP-sponsored Teleclinics/Fairs.
- Recognition: Participate in our Annual Appreciation Luncheon & Awards Ceremony.
- Interpreter Services: Coordinated for non-English speaking clients.
- Ongoing Support: Receive continuous support and follow-up from VAP staff throughout the assistance period.
Pro Bono Opportunities
Direct Representation Program: Provide low-income clients with full or limited-scope representation, brief service, or advice based on your expertise and preferred scope of service.
Statewide Legal Teleclinics: Offer one-time telephonic consultations to New Mexicans across the state from the comfort of your office or home. Typically held on Thursdays from 1:00-4:00 pm (MST).
Legal Fairs: Volunteer at in-person legal fairs coordinated throughout the state. Provide one-time consultations on pressing issues faced by pro se clients.
VAP Pro Bono Collaborative ECHO – CLE Program: Join our resource and learning platform, which offers free interactive CLEs and resources. Using the ECHO model, each CLE session includes a topic presentation by a subject matter expert and a hands-on case presentation. This program aims to expand the knowledge and expertise of volunteer attorneys through tele-mentorship while building a collaborative community focused on the legal needs of low-income rural New Mexicans.
